Anki alternative

An Anki alternative that writes the cards for you

Anki is brilliant at reviewing cards. Making them is the slow part. Mnema writes flashcards from your lecture recordings, slides and PDFs, tells you how far to trust each one, checks it against its source and lets you approve it before it is saved. Bring your Anki decks with you.

How it works

  1. 1

    Import your decks

Anki packages (.apkg, .colpkg) up to 200 MB and 50,000 notes, media included, cloze and image occlusion notes too.

  2. 2

    Add new material

Drop in a lecture recording, slides, a PDF or a photo, or just name a topic. Mnema asks what you need, then drafts the cards.

  3. 3

    Review with spaced repetition

Cards are scheduled with a simplified FSRS 6: default parameters and a retention target per deck, with reminders when cards are due. Cram decks and quizzes are there for the night before.

What moves over from Anki

Your notes, cards, images and audio become editable Mnema decks. Studied cards keep their schedule (FSRS as Anki had it, SM-2 converted), each card of a note its own, and your review history comes along, marked as imported so it never counts toward your streak or points. Image occlusion notes start as new cards.

Getting your cards out again: Mnema writes an Anki package (.apkg) of a deck, a quiz or all your decks, with cloze, type-in and image occlusion cards, pictures and sounds. Tick “Include my review progress” and your cards keep their due dates and review history in Anki; leave it off to share a deck that starts fresh. CSV and plain text are there too.

When Anki is still the better choice

Be honest with yourself about what you need. Anki is free on desktop and Android, keeps your collection on your device, has native mobile apps that work offline, a large add-on ecosystem and years of shared decks. Mnema is a web app, needs a connection and is in invite-only early access.

Anki's scheduling is also ahead. Its FSRS 6 has an optimiser that fits it to your own reviews, and same-day learning steps. Mnema's uses default parameters and brings a card back a day later at the soonest. Anki's own package format carries your scheduling to any Anki app.

If you already have a card-making routine you love, stay with Anki. If making the cards is what stops you, Mnema is built for that part.

Questions

Can I import my Anki decks into Mnema?

Yes. Anki packages (.apkg and .colpkg) up to 200 MB and 50,000 notes per import, with media up to 100 MB and 500 files. Very large shared decks may need to be split.

Does Mnema use FSRS?

Yes, a simplified FSRS 6 with default parameters and a retention target per deck. It has no optimiser and no same-day learning steps, so a card comes back a day later at the soonest. Cards you studied in Anki keep their FSRS memory, or get one converted from SM-2, and come up when they are due.

Can I go back to Anki later?

Yes. Export a deck, a quiz or all your decks as an Anki package (.apkg) and open it in Anki. With “Include my review progress” your cards keep their due dates and review history; the deck description says “Made with Mnema”. CSV and plain text work too.

Does Mnema work offline?

Not yet. Mnema runs in the browser on laptops, tablets and phones, you can add it to your Home Screen, and it needs a connection.

Is Mnema free?

Mnema is free during invite-only early access. Request early access and bring your decks.

Make cards you can check

Before you save, each AI card shows its passage and its page, slide, time or web page, says how far to trust it, and says whether a second check found it in the source.
